World Cup Roster Predictions

The opening rosters for the World Cup are to be announced tomorrow (March 2, 2016). Here are my predictions for the 16-man rosters;

Team USA:

Forwards – P. Kane, Kessel, Parise, Pavelski, Gadreau, Kesler, Backes, Ryan, Wheeler

Defensemen – Suter, Yandle, Shattenkirk, Carlson, McDonough, Faulk

Goalies – Schneider, Bishop (Tough to not put Quick in there, but I think he will round out the full complement of goaltenders)

Forwards- Crosby, Ja. Benn, Sequin, Hall, Getzlaf, Giroux, Stamkos, Tavares, Toews

Defensemen – Keith, Weber, Burns, Subban, Letang, Doughty

Goalies – Crawford, Holtby (is this even up for debate?)

TEAM RUSSIA: (assumes they only take NHL players)

Forwards – Ovechkin, Malkin, Tarasenko, Kuznetsov, Panarin, Datsyuk, Nichushkin, Kucherov, Anisimov

Defensemen – Marchenko, Nesterov, Orlov, Kulikov, Markov, Tyutin

Goalies – Varlamov, Bobrovsky

TEAM SWEDEN: (assumes they only take NHL players)

Forwards – Sedin(s), Zetterberg, Backstrom, Landeskog, Nyquist, Forsberg, Steen, Ericsson

Defensemen – Karlsson, Klingberg, Oliver Eckman-Larsson, Hedman, Kronwall, Edler (Dangerous!!)

Goalies – Lundqvist, Enroth

TEAM FINLAND: (assumes they only take NHL players)

Forwards – M. Koivu, Filppula, Jokinen, Korpikoski, Mi. Granlund, Barkov, Lehtera, Komorov, Teravainen

Defensemen – Vatanen, Ristolainen, Maatta, Jokipakka, Lindbohm, Lindell (WHO?)

Goalies – Rinne, Rask

Canada would be the obvious front-runner as they have loads of talent up front and their defensemen are arguably the best in the tournament (though Sweden is impressive). Team USA could opt for a player like Oshie instead of Backes out of the gate. Since tomorrow’s rosters will only be the tip of the iceberg, I think the most competitive teams will be the ones with the greatest amount of depth. There is a still six months of time between now and then, not to mention the next 3 months of intense playoff push/playoff hockey.

What are your thoughts on these preliminary roster suggestions?
